Dear Members,

We began the year 2007 with two major activities:

- the meeting in Paris where we met the ICMEC Honorary Committee of First Ladies as well as representatives of the European Commission and of ICMEC.
- the extraordinary Board meeting in Copenhagen.

Regarding the first event, as Chairman of the Board of ICMEC and President of Missing Children Europe, my wish was to call a meeting of First Ladies who could help us to open the doors of political world and media. I also considered this to be an opportunity for widening our movement beyond the two partners, ICMEC and Missing Children Europe, to become a worldwide organisation.

By welcoming the Honorary Committee of First Ladies and all of us at the Elysée Palace, Mrs Chirac realised my wish of gathering 500 worldwide personalities having great interest in children issues. I expressed this in a brief speech given during a closed session with the First Ladies, before the event attended by 500 people.

As such, the personalities from all over the world present at the Elysée Palace were invited to attend the second part of the day, at the occasion of which each of the First Ladies gave a very personal speech. The European Commission was widely associated in that event.

We can say today that the Paris meeting was a real success through the repercussion of this reunion and through the opportunity given to each First Lady to explain her own movement, as well as through the decisions taken at this session.

Regarding the second event, Bodil’s family made a warm Scandinavian reception to the Board members. Once again I want to say a hearty thank-you to the whole family and compliment them for the wonderful work done in preparation of the meeting and during our presence in Denmark.
Among other topics we planned to discuss with the General Assembly we have thought about:
- the future of our Federation through the revision of the statutes;
- improvements that can be realised in view of becoming an interlocutor for the
institutions of the European Union;
- the extension of our Federation with new members to exchange best practices and
provide mutual operational support;
- the representation of Europe in the framework of the world movement ICMEC;
- the special May 25th 2007, five years after the first celebration of the International
Missing Children’s Day in Europe!

INFORMATION FROM THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT

Dear Members,

Verlaine's son was born on February 8, 2007, a lovable boy of 3 kg 700 and 54,5 cm, named Alexandre.

The soft features of Alexandre’s face reminds us of his mother Verlaine, who will come back part time between May and November before going back to her full-time position this winter.We look forward to having her back, drawing inspiration and energy from her new life as a mum.

Here in Brussels we began moving to our new offices at the end of January. This means that the General Secretariat is now a bit more independent from Child Focus. Next steps are to get our personal entrance and mailbox on the corner just after avenue Hooba de Strooper, in the rue Stiénon.

In the meantime a Romanian delegation of police and NGO came from February 19 to 21 for a study visit at Child Focus. They also met with two units of Belgian Federal Police, which they required because of their working methodology in the field of missing and sexually exploited children.

We pursue our activity and are proud to present you the fourth edition of the newsletter. As you all know, we have been quite busy with the implementation of the European telephone number for missing children 116 000. By now you must have read Delphine’s mail of April 5, 2007 on the “Follow up event 23 March + next steps 116 000” allowing those who couldn’t join us to be informed on the events of that day.

Furthermore, the Secretariat continued to pro-actively participate in the work of the Expert Group on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, about which you are all encouraged to read the article in this newsletter.

Another interesting activity has been the launch of the Member’s Call Group. This group was created upon request of the Board, and has met in a conference call twice since. The aim of this group is to share experiences with each other, and to keep the members closely informed and involved in the work of the Secretariat.

And of course we are closely working with Child Focus on the celebration of next May 25. It has been five years since we started joining our forces to remind people of Europe and of the world to never forget the Missing Children.

Having the Board meeting and the General Assembly scheduled next June 8,9,10 in mind, we are slowly but certainly preparing and soon ready to present you candidates for the position of President and of General Secretary.

We wish you the very best, with tons of energy to continue your activities, and look forward to seeing you in June.

Acting Secretary General
